There are so many benefits of teaching children how to cook including;

Numeracy – as children count out spoonful’s and weigh ingredients or look at numbers on the recipe.

Early Science - as they observe the consistency of mixtures change, colours merge and ingredients be transformed by heat or cold.

Health – as your child is introduced to new flavours and tastes. Children learn hygiene routines such as washing hands.

Physical skills – such as strengthening their grip and practising hand-eye co-ordination as they handle kitchen implements such as spoons, whisks, knifes and graters.

Communication – as children are introduced to new words and phrases, and learn how to follow a recipe. They talk about changes they see and predict what might happen.

Emotional development – as they gain confidence in small groups, working together to achieve something new.

At Eaton Socon pre-school we cook with the children at least once a term in small groups to allow children to be involved properly, kept safe and hear instructions easily. We cook healthy tooth friendly foods. We use a progressive approach, slowly building in new skills each time we cook something new.

 For example starting with learning how to scoop, pour and mix ingredients to make playdough, then moving on to learning how to chop and grate vegetables to use as toppings for pizzas or adding to a pasta salad, children then combine both of these skills to make savoury muffins.

All of our recipes can be found here so that you can try them at home too.
